AI hasn’t taken over the world yet but it certainly has taken over the air waves. Not a day goes by without AI dominating the headlines. Lately, the news feels more bad than good, with ominous warnings of AI ending life as we know it. Whether you fear a hit to your stock portfolio, a data center moving into your neighborhood, or the loss of your career, AI is the culprit. While it’s true AI has made a lot of things easier and promises many potential benefits to humankind, the fear of it being misused by bad actors is widespread — and valid. That’s why Human Intelligence (HI) must stay front and center. Human intelligence is the only thing that can direct AI responsibly and productively. It’s also why AI can’t replace real estate agents.
AI IS AN IMITATION
Just what, exactly, is AI? In a nutshell it’s the overarching field of creating machines capable of mimicking human intelligence. At its heart is Machine Learning (ML) where computers learn from data without being explicitly programmed. This in turn generates Large Language Models (LLM), an artificial intelligence system trained on massive amounts of text to understand, summarize, translate, and generate human language. They power popular chatbots, draft emails, write computer code, analyze legal files, translate languages and summarize long documents. And then there’s image generation which uses computer systems modeled after the human brain to scan and learn visual patterns from billions of paired images and text captions.
WHAT IS HI?
The best way to define Human Intelligence (HI) is to call it “wisdom.” Wisdom is defined as “The practical ability to make good judgments and sound choices by applying knowledge, deep understanding, and life experience.” HI provides moral judgment, uses real curiosity to discover new answers, builds trust through empathy, and can navigate ambiguity using life intuition. AI is a machine for the measurable. HI is the thing that can’t be exactly measured or perfectly defined, but we sure feel it when it’s not there.
Agents that use AI tools in a smart way but continue to center their services around human relationships will thrive.
THE GOOD NEWS
The good news is that AI will not be taking over agent roles anytime soon. Why? Because when it comes to buying or selling a home, no algorithm can replace the insight, guidance, and personal care of a trusted real estate agent. This is HI at work.
The best agents are skilled negotiators who inspire trust and provide empathy and emotional support. Most importantly, skilled agents are creative problem solvers. These are things AI is unable to replace. AI is good at measuring and recommending what has already worked in the past. But in real estate, each deal is different and unpredictable, requiring nuanced decision making, compromises, and quick pivots. Highly skilled agents use their knowledge, morality and an understanding of consequences derived from real life experience to serve their clients and close deals. This is called wisdom. And wisdom can’t be coded. AI can tell you what usually happens. But human Intelligence can read between the lines. This distinction is critical.
AI IS JUST ANOTHER TOOL

There are certainly things AI can do that are a big help to a busy real estate agent. Following are popular AI tools specifically for real estate. Check them out:

LAST WORDS
Carefully selecting AI tools that will work for the specifics of your business is a smart move. You don’t want to get left behind. However, as you begin to research and add AI tools to your tool box beware of the AI backlash currently underway. At its core, people want to deal with people–not machines. Fake is out. Real authenticity is in (and always has been). Agents that use AI tools in a smart way but continue to center their services around human relationships will thrive. On the other hand, handing your business over to AI is a huge mistake. Too much AI is a real turn-off and folks will sense it and go elsewhere. Remember that AI is just a tool, one of many, in your arsenal. Your best, most valuable tool is YOU because you have unique experience and perspective that guide you through the labyrinth of judgments and decisions that must be made in real estate. You are the only you there is and as such you are uniquely irreplaceable.
