Being handed the keys to your new home is a big moment. But what the next moment holds may not be as warm and fuzzy. For example, who else might have the very same keys you were just given? And what might their intentions be? Both of these questions are ones you, as a new homeowner, don’t want for long. Fortunately, there’s something called a Re-key Service that will solve your problem. Following is everything you need to know about a Re-key Service:
WHAT’S A RE-KEY SERVICE?
A Re-key Service is when a locksmith changes the working key of the lock to a different key without replacing the lock itself. They do this by taking the lock apart and replacing some of the parts inside called “tumblers” or “key pins.” This is much more cost effective than replacing the actual locks. And if you are lucky enough to have a home warranty from Fidelity National Home Warranty as part of your closing, this service is included.*
WHEN SHOULD YOU RE-KEY A LOCK?
If you’ve purchased a new home or had your keys lost or stolen, it’s a good idea to have your locks re-keyed or replaced to keep your home safe and secure. And keep in mind that re-keying your locks is usually more effective than buying new locks.
A RE-KEY SERVICE ENHANCES THE SECURITY OF YOUR LOCKS
This little known fact is perhaps the best reason to always re-key. If you buy new locks from a regular hardware store, they are less reliable because they are similar. Most off-the-shelf door locks have a standardized locking system. If a homeowner uses such locks, it’s easier for an intruder to pick them because they can be done with standard lock picks. A re-key service means your locks will have better security because a re-key professional will make you a completely customized pin arrangement.
CAN ANYONE RE-KEY A LOCK?
The short answer is “yes.” However, each brand of lock will require a separate re-key lock kit. If you are super handy, you could try this yourself. On the other hand, it can be a bit complicated, with a lot of small parts. In this case, there’s something to be said for having a professional handle it. And a number of states, like California, Texas, Nevada and Oregon, to name a few, require locksmiths to be licensed. This also means they undergo a criminal background check, which adds an additional layer of security.
HOW MANY TIMES CAN YOU RE-KEY A LOCK?
You will like this answer: As many times as you want! It’s unlimited. (Keep in mind if you are using your home warranty for this service, it’s typically one time per contract.)
CAN A DEADBOLT BE RE-KEYED?
Yes. To re-key the deadbolt, remove it from the door and re-pin as you do a doorknob. Make sure the bolt is out and remove the screws holding the deadbolt to the door.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR A RE-KEY SERVICE?
If done by a professional, it typically takes about 10 to 40 minutes per lock (including deadbolts). Compare that to replacing the locks, which can take 30 to 60 minutes per lock.
RE-KEY MEANS NEW KEYS
Every series of key pins in your lock corresponds to a specific key. When you replace those pins with different ones, you essentially set a new key that will now operate the lock. You can also have one master key to work all doors as long as all your locks are the same brand. Make sure to ask your re-key professional about this option. At Fidelity National Home Warranty, a re-key service is provided on up to six functional keyholes (including deadbolts). You will be given four copies of each new key, one time per contract term.*
In short, re-keying is a quick and effective way to upgrade your locks and ensure your safety and protection.
