What is “Mys” and How to Use it in Your Home

Mys is a nordic design trend hailing from Sweden and means “coziness.” Its essential philosophy is to use interior design to create a lifestyle practice of deep comfort and appreciation. More than mere decoration, mys embodies a lifestyle built around work-life balance. Examples include cuddling up with a good book, sharing time with friends, or having a leisurely meal. Learn more about “mys” and how to use it in your home:

LIGHTING

Use lamps with warm light bulbs, candles and a fireplace if you have one. Natural lighting is a primary focus of mys.

NATURAL ELEMENTS

This cozy living room includes many “mys” aesthetics, including candle light, natural elements like wood and fur, and a variety of textures. The throws on the couch invite one to settle in and cuddle up.

Nature inspired aesthetics are one of the foundations of mys. Use wood, wool, linen and basketry throughout your home. Carpets, pillows, blankets, throws, lamp shades and window coverings made from these materials add depth, warmth and visual interest.

ELECTRONICS

Put away electronics or display them discreetly. For example, put your TV in a display case with doors that can be shut.

DECOR

Choose furniture that emphasizes comfort over design. You want people to feel like when they come over they’re welcome to lounge and stay a while, so make sure your couches and chairs prioritize function over form.

MYS OUTSIDE

The concept of mys extends to all aspects of your home and lifestyle, including your yard. To take a look at some ideas on how to create the ideal “cozy” backyard….click here.

More than anything, “mys” is about mindfully making your space comfortable and inviting above all else. This encourages reconnection to things that are most important in life: Family, friends and nature.
