The following back-to-school tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics offer great advice for getting your reluctant student back into the swing of school. Since August is back-to-school month – a few tips for a great start.
The schedule
Get your student started on their school schedule a week or so ahead of time to ease them into the change.
New school?
If your child is facing a new situation such as a new school, take them for a visit before the first day of school. Let them know other kids probably have similar feelings. This doesn’t apply to only those students beginning a new school year in a new city or state, sometimes just making the leap from elementary school to junior high can be stressful for a kid.
Attend an orientation if one is available
If your child is beginning a new school, take advantage of any available orientations beforehand. Make sure to include your students join you for any school tours available for new students.
Think positive
Your children pick up on their parent’s negative attitude and outlook, so remember to stay upbeat. Stress the positive aspects of school. Remind your student of the friends they will see again and the new friends they are bound to make.
Find a friend
If possible, find another student in the neighborhood with whom your child can ride or walk to school.
Accompany your younger children
If need be, drive your younger child, or walk with them to school on their first day. Try to arrive early to avoid the unnecessary stress that comes from arriving with very little time available to get situated.
