There’s no worse time to discover your heater isn’t performing at its peak than mid-winter. Take a look at our tips to keep your family warm and make sure your heater does its best work this winter.
The Filters
One of the most important things a homeowner can do for their heating system is maintaining its filters.
Clean the filters
Clean furnace filters about once a month. Furnace filters are designed to capture dirt and airborne particles during the intake of air. Furnace filters not maintained will eventually clog. This means more time to heat your home and more to pay for heating your home.
To clean, make sure the furnace is turned off. Next, remove the access panel and slide out the screen. Clean it with water and use a brush and cleaner if necessary. Make sure it’s completely dry before replacing it.
Replace the filters
Make sure your heater does its best work this winter by helping it out with fresh filters. Replace furnace filters every few months.

The Ductwork
Damaged ductwork or ductwork full of holes or openings will only cause your furnace to work harder. Replace all collapsed or damaged ductwork. Make sure all vents are clean and that airflow is not prevented by any obstructions or restrictions.
The Thermostat
Make sure your thermostat starts up properly. Once on, does your thermostat achieve the temperature you set for it? According to DirectEngergy.com, the optimum comfortable room temperature ranges from 68° to 76° F.
To help your home maintain its proper temps, make sure your windows and doors are properly sealed. Properly sealed windows and doors will prove to be a great money-saving tactic for every season of the year.
