Are your credit cards so full from the holidays they had to undo the top button of their trousers? Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate the ones you love. We know the ones you love don’t wish more debt for you. We’re sharing a few creative ideas for how you and your special someone can Celebrate Valentine’s Day on the Cheap.
Write a Love Letter
If your special someone has always stepped up to the plate and been there for you, there’s no better day than Valentine’s Day to let your feelings known. Make it official and put it in writing. Don’t make Hallmark do all the work. This small show of affection will go a long way with the ones you love. In this age of texting, a love letter in an envelope is not just unique, it’s something your loved ones can cherish for years to come. If you want to kick it up a notch, mail your letter to your Valentine ahead of time.
Put Your Phone Away
While you’re at it, put your computer away, too. If you always have your phone at arm’s length, put it in the other room on Valentine’s Day. Spend a few hours giving the person you adore as much attention as you typically give your Instagram page. The “likes” you get will be uninterrupted convo and maybe a longing gaze or two.
Go Wine (or Beer) Tasting in Your Kitchen
We can’t all spend a day wine tasting in Napa. Besides, it gets pretty pricey. If wine is your partner’s passion, this is the perfect night to DIY. Grab a few different varietals. Set up a relaxing spot in your kitchen or dining room, and score your sips on creative, inexpensive, wine-tasting placemats. If beer is more to your liking, grab a variety of brews and have fun scoring your favorites together.
DIY Cheese Tasting
You and your special someone don’t drink? Say “cheese” instead. Grab a few different cheeses from different categories, such as soft (brie), semi-firm (cheddar), and aged (parmesan). Use your imagination to come up with your own combo of cheeses. Up your cheese game with a journal and keep track of which cheeses you both enjoy and would purchase again.
Chip in on a Chore
Does your special someone have a loathsome chore they do without protest? Surprise your sweetheart by swooping in and tackling the task without being asked. Whether it’s dishes, taking out the trash, gassing the car, or scrubbing a toilet. Cross something off your Valentine’s “honey-do” list today.
Have a Picnic
There’s something about having a meal on a blanket on the ground that makes us feel like a kid again. Spread a blanket or table cloth in the middle of the living room floor and enjoy the out-of-ordinary sensation of dinner from a different perspective.
Rent a Movie
Don’t settle for what’s on TV. Use Apple TV or Amazon to find a movie you’ve both been wanting to actually see. Make homemade popcorn and settle in as cozy as you like. Tonight there’s little chance a tall stranger will sit down in front of you and block your view of the screen.
Stash a Secret Gift
Hide a small box of candy or other treats where you’re sure your beloved will find it. Put the gift in their car seat, stash it next to the coffee maker, or under a computer keyboard. This is a sweet way to let someone know you’re thinking of them today. No need to spend much.
