
Memorial Day is the unofficial start of the summer season, but more importantly, it’s also a patriotic holiday that reminds us of those who’ve fought and sacrificed for our freedom. Here are 10 unique ways to celebrate and honor Memorial Day:
1) GO WILD WITH THE RED, WHITE AND BLUE
There is no better time (except perhaps the Fourth of July) to go wild with your red, white and blue.
2) LEARN SOME HISTORY
Read “In Flander’s Field” by John McCrae, one of the most famous poems from WW1. This will give you some insight and history on the meaning of Memorial Day.
3) TAKE A ROAD TRIP
Take a road trip to visit iconic American spots (like the Grand Canyon). We have the lucky benefit of living in large and diverse country and there’s a lot to see.
4) SEND A CARE PACKAGE
Chances are you have family members, neighbors and/or friends that are currently active duty in the military. Take a moment to think of them. Better yet, take an extra step and send a care packages to a soldier. Go to Soldiers’ Angels online to get started.
5) UNDERSTAND THE “TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER”
Watch the wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier….and research its complex significance.
6) GO TO A PARADE
When was the last time you went to a parade? Really get into the spirit and attend a Memorial Day parade!
7) DONATE TO VETERANS
Make an online donation to the US Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
8) ENJOY A NATIONAL PARK
Visit one of our National Parks….there are over 424 of them!
9) VOLUNTEER
Volunteer for a veterans’ focused organization. (Go to Habitat for Humanity’s Veterans Build program.)
10) TAKE A MOMENT
Take a moment of silence to remember and appreciate the sacrifice of our veterans.
